Status of Medical Aid in Dying

The End-of-Life Options Act (SB 1950) would authorize medical aid in dying in Illinois. The bill was introduced during the 2025 legislative session by House Majority Leader Robyn Gabel and Assistant Senate Majority Leader Linda Holmes. The legislation is summarized here.

On May 29th, SB 1950 was approved by the House in a 63 to 42 vote. The bill’s next stop is the Senate floor. While the 2025 legislative session has adjourned, the bill remains viable, and we will advocate for it in the fall 2025 veto session.

In a 2023 poll, 71% of likely Illinois voters supported this compassionate legislation, and the majority of Illinois physicians also support this option.
