Status of Medical Aid in Dying

On January 9, 2024, Del. Patrick Hope filed HB858, and on January 10, Sen. Ghazala Hashmi filed SB280, mirror bills that, if passed, would authorize medical aid for dying in Virginia. Both bills moved successfully through their initial committees. On February 13, 2024, HB858 failed to pass in the House. On February 9, SB 280 was voted to pass (21 -19) by the VA Senate. This bill then went to the House committees to follow the passage process after “crossover day” on February 13.  On March 4, SB280 was heard in the House Committee on Courts of Justice, which decided, via voice vote, to carry the bill over to the next year. This is a polite way of ending the movement of the bill and we will work with our bill sponsors to refile the bill in January of 2025.
