House Speaker announces support for Medical Aid in Dying and introduces bill!

January 25, 2017

The movement for expanded end-of-life options, including medical aid in dying, is building momentum in Hawaii. In December, you contacted your lawmakers and tell them how important authorizing medical aid in dying in Hawaii was to you — and your voices were heard loud and clear at the capitol.

In his Opening Day speech, House Speaker Joseph M. Souki announced his support for medical aid in dying in Hawaii, stating, “Those who are suffering from a terminal illness and are of sound mind should be given the opportunity to decide how they will end their own lives.” Now he’s introduced HB201 Relating to Aid in Dying. Having our bill introduced by the Speaker of the House is a huge development!

Now, take the next step in advocating for this crucial legislation:

Join Compassion & Choices Hawaii for a Public Education Forum on Medical Aid in Dying on Tuesday, January 31, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at the Hawaii State Capitol Auditorium.

A strong showing at the public forum will indicate to lawmakers that we, like 80% of Hawaii voters, demand the authorization of aid in dying in Hawaii. Let’s fill the room!

At the forum, local doctors, patients and families will give attendees a comprehensive understanding of the importance of medical aid in dying, how the law works and the safeguards against abuse. We will also cover Oregon’s experience with the Death with Dignity Act, which has been law for nearly 20 years.

But perhaps most importantly, the public forum will be a place where supporters like you can learn how to be the most effective possible advocates for this legislation and be part of building this campaign. The support of kama’aina like you will be the difference in what is sure to be a difficult fight in the legislature. But together, I’m confident we will win and bring peace of mind to Hawaii residents facing suffering at the end of life.

Please Join us for the public forum on January 31. Click here to RSVP.
