At end-of-life, most of us would like to see our own wishes for care followed, to be at peace spiritually and to be comfortable without pain, according to a recent Economist/Kaiser Family Foundation Survey. Hospice is fully committed to fulfilling those wishes. Last week, I attended the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) Management and Leadership Conference. One session that stood out was the presentation on The Unexpected Journey for CA Hospices: Legalizing the End of Life Options Act by Jan Jones, the President and CEO of Elizabeth Hospice in California and Chair of the NHPCO Board of Directors.

Jan discussed how California hospices are developing and adopting policies that comply with California law and respecting patients’ end-of-life wishes while honoring an institution’s ideas and values. Jan noted Compassion & Choices is a resource that can help hospices navigate the law and develop policies that work.

We are thrilled that so many people, like Jan, continue providing leadership about the importance of honoring and respecting the needs of terminally ill patients and their families. Thankfully, more and more hospice professionals also are ready to provide comfort by honoring patients’ wishes at the end of life.
