CapeNews.net: Letter: ‘Urge Lawmakers to Support MA End of Life Options Act’

October 15, 2021

An excerpt from the CapeNews.net/The Falmouth Enterprise/The Bourne Enterprise letter to the editor by East Falmouth resident Stephanie J. Miele, published Oct. 15, 2021:

I would like to call attention to An Act Relative to End of Life Options that is currently being debated before the Joint Committee on Public Health [in the state Legislature]. To briefly summarize the contents, this bill allows terminally ill, capable adults to request a physician to prescribe medication to end their lives when their suffering becomes unbearable. These patients must meet strict criteria before being deemed eligible for this medication. Two doctors and a healthcare practitioner must evaluate them. They must have six months or less to live, and they must be able to physically take the medication themselves. Once it has been determined that they meet the criteria, they are eligible for a prescription…

Some of you might feel that there is no way that you would ever choose this option. That is your choice, and it is to be supported and respected. But it is your choice. I urge you to consider giving support to those of us who would make a different decision.

Please contact your state senators and representatives to urge them to support An Act Relative to End of Life Options.
