(Denver – April 11, 2017) Compassion & Choices has launched a new Colorado “Find Care” tool to empower residents to find and choose health systems and medical teams in their area that support patient choice under the Colorado End-of-Life Options Act. This tool will help people wisely choose health care facilities, hospice and medical teams to ensure that they receive the end-of-life care that best fits their own values and priorities. The Find Care tool will also provide information to enable individuals to establish care with a new facility, hospice or medical team if their current health care providers are not supportive of patient choice.
“The Colorado Find Care tool is the latest effort in our bilingual campaign to educate and empower terminally ill people to get the care and end-of-life experience that they want,” said Kat West, national director of policy and programs for Compassion & Choices. “All Coloradans should start talking to their doctors now about what care options they want available to them before they faced with end-of-life decisions.”
As part of the bilingual Colorado Access Campaign, Compassion & Choices is conducting free training webinars for doctors, hospice staff and other healthcare professionals.The nonprofit organization also offers a free, confidential Doc2Doc consultation program and Pharmacist2Pharmacist consultation program.
This month, Compassion & Choices also will be forming Action Teams with volunteers from across the state to provide free public education and presentations at libraries, health fairs, conferences and to requesting organizations about the End-of-Life Options Act.
“When terminally ill individuals fully understand their care options, they can focus on living, not dying,” said Coloradan Matt Larson. “Compassion & Choices has been an invaluable resource for Coloradans to learn more about the law, how it works and how to talk to our own doctors.”
Under the Colorado End-of-Life Options Act, facilities are not authorized to prohibit doctors from participating or from preventing any staff from supporting patients who choose medical aid in dying as one of their end-of-life care options.
