In Focus- March 2025 Newsletter
Each of us will one day face the end of life—whether it’s our own, a loved one’s, or a close friend’s. Far too often, our healthcare system denies that death is inevitable or fails to respect people’s right to make their own informed decisions about how they want to live their final days. That’s why advancing patient autonomy in end of life medicine and healthcare is at the heart of Compassion & Choices’ mission. We stand firmly for the principle that every individual should be free to chart their own end-of-life journey, in the way that is best for their unique circumstances.
As a part of Compassion & Choices, you join with people of all backgrounds, beliefs and political leanings united by the conviction that end-of-life decisions belong to each person, free from manipulation or interference by healthcare entities or government. Our movement already includes nearly 620,000 supporters, and together, we can push back against efforts to take away our self-determination and rights, while we continue to expand options and improve care for all of us.
Ultimately, end-of-life freedom means having the power to decide what treatments you want or don’t, and how you want to live and die. It could mean choosing hospice care for comfort and support, opting for every possible treatment to extend life, or, for qualified terminally ill adults, accessing medical aid in dying if suffering becomes unbearable. No matter the choice, it should rest with the person affected.
This is a nationwide movement that needs your voice more than ever. In states working toward authorizing medical aid in dying, overwhelming support from lawmakers exist, yet a handful still stand in the way. In places like Montana, these legislators are pushing to criminalize doctors who support their patients in making their own end-of-life decisions. Late last year, West Virginia lawmakers put forward a cynical ballot initiative that only passed by the narrowest margin, putting a ban on medical aid in dying in the state’s constitution. Governors in Nevada (2023) and Delaware (2024) have halted enactment of bills passed by their legislatures. These actions threaten patient-directed care and undermine the very essence of good medicine – supporting patients’ personal, deeply held decisions.
That’s why your voice matters, no matter where you live or where you stand politically. We must show lawmakers in statehouses across the nation – on both sides of the aisle – that end-of-life freedom is a fundamental right. Join us and ensure everyone can exercise their own choices when it matters most.
