Siena Poll: New York Voters Continue to Support Medical Aid in Dying by Nearly 2-to-1 Margin

July 1, 2025

Gov. Hochul has the opportunity to do the right thing on the merits, which also happens to be the position of the majority of New York voters. Win, win.”

A new Siena College poll released today continues to show that New Yorkers strongly support medical aid in dying, 54-28%. By nearly two-to-one, voters support “legislation that would allow a doctor to prescribe lethal drugs that a terminally ill patient with demonstrated decision-making capacity could take on their own in order to end their own life.”

“This new Siena College poll – showing yet again a nearly two-to-one margin of support for medical aid in dying – reconfirms what every poll on this issue in New York has shown: New Yorkers strongly support the Medical Aid in Dying Act,” said Corinne Carey, Compassion & Choices’ senior campaign director for New York and New Jersey.

“Democrats support medical aid in dying by 33 points, independents by 28 points and Republicans by nine points. New York City voters support it by 34 points, and support is even larger, 37 points, in both the downstate suburbs and upstate,” Carey said. “It has nearly identical support from Jewish voters (53-30%) and Catholic voters (52-30%).

“It seems like the old cliché that good government is good politics holds true here. Governor Hochul has the opportunity to do the right thing on the merits, which also happens to be the position of the majority of New York voters. Win, win,” Carey said. “But even more importantly, if the Governor signs the bill into law – making New York the 12th state (plus Washington, D.C.) to authorize medical aid in dying – she will provide peace and comfort to current and future dying New Yorkers who desperately want this option and bodily autonomy at the end of their lives.”

The Medical Aid in Dying Act has received support from numerous important medical, legal and other statewide associations, including (for full list, click here):
