Medscape Launches Continuing Medical Education (CME) Activity on Medical Aid in Dying

Authored by board member Dr. Chandana Banerjee, this resource helps physicians stay up to date and informed about this end-of-life care option.

An exciting new CME resource for end-of-life education, Medical Aid in Dying: My Clinical Guide and Practice Points, is now available on Medscape. Founded in 1995, Medscape — part of the WebMD group — is a leading online medical destination, reaching millions of doctors and other healthcare professionals worldwide. This CME provides clinicians with a comprehensive tool to learn the clinical criteria and current standard of care for how to practice medical aid in dying. Physicians are eligible to receive one CME credit for completion, and the activity is available to anyone who wants to learn more about the healthcare option.

This Medscape accredited content is an important contribution to the field of end-of-life care. Clinicians who practice in states that have laws authorizing medical aid in dying may not know the latest research findings and clinical guidelines, so educational resources like this help healthcare practitioners stay up to date and dispel misperceptions that hinder appropriate use of medical aid in dying. Ideally this will result in greater awareness and acceptance by medical professionals, in turn leading to more patients being given a voice in their end-of-life care and access to this option for ending their suffering on their own terms. Since its launch in mid-November, 2,300 “learners” have completed the activity, including 1,033 physicians.

Medical Aid in Dying: My Clinical Guide and Practice Points was authored by esteemed City of Hope National Medical Center faculty member and Compassion & Choices board member Dr. Chandana Banerjee. Dr. Banerjee, who specializes in hospice and palliative care, also developed and directed City of Hope’s End of Life Symposium, on which Compassion & Choices is a collaborator. In fact, the latest installment of the Symposium, How Medical Aid in Dying Really Works in Authorized States, is coming up on February 4; register now!
