Hispanic Heritage Month, spanning September 15 to October 15, celebrates the rich history, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino people in the United States.
Compassion & Choices is excited to sponsor and participate in several Hispanic Heritage Month events this year as part of our Latino and Hispanic Community Engagement work. In doing so, we are able to connect with communities across the country and equip more people to prepare for their future healthcare and end-of-life experience.
Hispanic Heritage Month begins September 15th with the anniversary of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua’s independence from Spain. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16th, followed by Chile on September 18th.
This year, Compassion & Choices is sponsoring Mexican Independence Day celebrations in Santa Fe, Cleveland, and Philadelphia in collaboration with local partners including the New Mexico Community Health Worker Association and Comite Mexicano de Cleveland. These events provide an opportunity to gather; celebrate Mexican culture and history; and enjoy traditional food, music and art.
Leslie Martinez, C&C’s Latino Engagement manager, will attend the Mexican Independence Day celebration in Philadelphia organized by the Mexican Cultural Center to connect with attendees, share end-of-life resources, and spread the word about Compassion & Choices’ mission.
With partners LatinX Voces and Face to Face, we’re collaborating on a virtual event in Spanish with the Smithsonian for adults with dementia and their caregivers. And we will co-host a webinar in Spanish on October 17 to provide an introduction to end-of-life care and planning, with the option to attend virtually or in person in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Additionally, Leslie Martinez will participate in Well Connected Español on October 25, a telephone and online program for Spanish speakers, to share more about end-of-life healthcare. She will also speak at the annual Vision y Compromiso Conference in Los Angeles to address healthcare equity for Latinos at the end of life and other pressing topics.
We look forward to a meaningful month of celebration and connection!
