Experience Other Side, the Powerful Story of Compassion & Choices Advocate Lynda Bluestein, Premiering at SXSW 2025

February 26, 2025

South by Southwest (SXSW) has long been a platform for groundbreaking films that challenge perspectives and ignite meaningful conversations. This year, one of the festival’s most anticipated documentaries, Other Side, is set to make waves with its deeply personal and powerful portrayal of Lynda Bluestein, a fierce Compassion & Choices advocate for medical aid in dying.

Lynda’s story is not just one of resilience in the face of terminal illness; it’s a testament to the power of advocacy and the fight for patient-directed care. After battling cancer three times and enduring rounds of grueling treatments, Lynda made it her mission to gain access to medical aid in dying. But Connecticut, her home state, did not allow it.

Compassion & Choices—and Lynda—refused to accept this limitation. Our legal team filed suit on her behalf against the state of Vermont to gain access to their medical aid in dying law. She won, setting a powerful precedent.

Other Side: A Story That Needed to Be Told

Directed by an award-winning filmmaking team, Other Side is an intimate portrait of Lynda’s journey, her unwavering spirit, and the loving family that supported her. The documentary follows her final year of life, capturing raw and emotional moments as she navigates not only her illness but also the legal and ethical complexities of end-of-life decision-making.

Compassion & Choices is proud to have worked closely with the filmmakers to provide resources and insight into the movement for medical aid in dying. Beyond connecting them with Lynda, we helped ensure that the film accurately represents the broader fight for end-of-life autonomy and the importance of patient-directed care. The result is a documentary that not only tells Lynda’s deeply personal story but also sheds light on the movement she helped propel forward.

Why Other Side Matters Now More Than Ever

As the conversation around medical aid in dying continues to evolve across the country, Other Side offers a rare and urgent glimpse into the realities that patients and their families face. Lynda’s story is not an isolated one; millions of Americans with terminal illnesses confront the same questions and barriers. Her victory in Vermont represents a crucial step forward, but there is still work to be done to expand and improve access to medical aid in dying laws nationwide.

This film serves as both a call to action and an invitation to engage in meaningful dialogue. It challenges audiences to consider the fundamental right to choose how we say goodbye, and encourages a deeper understanding of what compassionate end-of-life care truly means.
