“The House appropriations bill’s rider released today to repeal the D.C. Death with Dignity Act and to prevent the D.C. Council from repassing it in the future is cruel and unusual punishment for terminally ill D.C. residents who will suffer needlessly if this bill becomes law,” said Donna Smith, D.C. campaign director for Compassion & Choices. “This is congressional overreach at its worst. Congressional non-residents have no right to use a spending bill to override the veto-proof vote of D.C. Councilmembers who passed this compassionate legislation on behalf of D.C. residents.”
The House Appropriations Committee will consider the bill tomorrow, June 22nd at 8:30 a.m.
“Sadly, they clearly don’t realize that this is a non-partisan, bodily autonomy issue and they are out of touch with their own constituents,” said Smith. “A 2021 survey by a top-rated, multi-state, GOP pollster, Susquehanna Polling & Research, shows two out of three Americans (67%) personally want the option of medical aid in dying to peacefully end their suffering, including 68% of Republicans and 70% of Democrats, and at least six out of 10 Americans (61%-79%) in all six regions of the country.”
