Death Positivity and Stories that Sustain our Movement

Storytelling propels the movement for end-of-life care and options to new heights and informs the way Americans discuss death.

Andrew Flack was a teacher, hockey fan and advocate living with advanced cancer. He was a Compassion & Choices storyteller and advocate, participating in webinars, videos and other communications to advocate for medical aid in dying. He used California’s End of Life Option Act to access medical aid in dying and died on November 16, 2022. Andrew could not die at home in Illinois, where he grew up, because it does not yet allow the option of medical aid in dying.

Rita Florea – Diagnosed with lung cancer in April 2022, Rita Florea (1946-2023) accessed California’s End of Life Option Act and died peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on January 4, 2023. Rita advocated for medical aid in dying as a Compassion & Choices storyteller.

Isa Mendez – Isa Mendez is a member of Compassion & Choices’ Latino Leadership Council and is living with stage IV uterine cancer. She participates in events and webinars with Compassion & Choices to raise awareness about end-of-life care and options.
