Colorado End-of-Life Options Wins More Support Than Any Candidate or Issue on 2016 Ballot

December 17, 2016

A vote analysis of Prop. 106, Yes on Colorado End-of-Life Options, indicates that at a time when the country is divided, the issue of personal choice in end-of-life care unites us. Colorado voters approved the initiative by a nearly 30-point margin. The new law gives terminally ill adults the option to get a doctor’s prescription for medication they may decide to take to end unbearable suffering, by dying peacefully in their sleep.

Prop. 106 generated at least 400,000 more yes votes than either of the major party presidential candidates and more total votes than any candidate and the other 9 issues on the Colorado ballot. Voters across a broad demographic range supported Prop. 106, according to exit polling by The Associated Press and TV networks in Colorado. Both men and women, Hispanics and whites and people with and without college degrees said they backed the proposal.

  • Colorado End-of-Life Options Act (Prop. 106) received more Yes votes than any other measure with nearly two out of every three voters (64.8%) affirming their desire to allow Coloradans the peaceful end-of-life care option of medical aid in dying, according to Associated Press data published by the Denver Post.
  • Prop. 106 generated more total votes and supportive votes than any candidate or issue on the Colorado ballot and had the largest margin of victory of any ballot initiative, with 64.8% of people voting Yes compared to the 35.1 percent who voted No.
  • Voter support for Prop. 106 (64.8%) was almost 17 percentage points higher than support for the Democratic (48%) or Republican (43.4%) presidential candidates, according to the Denver Post.
  • Despite the fact that Prop. 106 was at the bottom of many county ballots, more Coloradans voted Yes for 106 than for any other ballot initiative, with support from 1,713,428 Coloradans.
  • Prop. 106 generated at least 400,000 more yes votes than either of the major party presidential candidates and more total votes as well.
