In Washington, D.C., you can’t have too many friends and allies. That is why we are thrilled to now be part of the Coalition for Liberty & Justice. The Coalition, a broad alliance of organizations that works to ensure public policy protects the religious liberty of individuals of all faiths and no faith and to oppose policies that impose one religious viewpoint on all, firmly believes that:

  • Allowing someone to die with dignity can be one of the most compassionate acts a health professional can perform
  • It is not noble nor compassionate to force people with a terminal illness to suffer against their stated wishes. We should not impose our religious views on others nor interfere with their personal decisions
  • Doctors can and should be committed to alleviating suffering. Sometimes allowing a person to die with dignity is the best way to do that. Where the law allows for this possibility, patients should be able to consult with their doctors about their quality of life and level of pain and, if they choose, to refuse treatment.

We recently attended the Coalition’s conference on promoting religious liberty held in D.C. and were able to further enhance our relationship with other groups who believe that people should be able to choose medical aid in dying as an end-of-life option.
