The week of March 3, 2025, will be consequential—and hopefully joyful—for the movement to authorize medical aid in dying in Maryland.

The Honorable Elijah E. Cummings and the Honorable Shane E. Pendergrass End-of-Life Option Act (SB0926/HB1328)—which would authorize this compassionate end-of-life option—will be heard on March 3 by the House Health and Government Operations Committee, and on March 5 by the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee.

While we are optimistic about our path to advance in committee, there are still several senators who have not committed to supporting the bill: Sens. Carl W. Jackson (D8), Benjamin T. Brooks, Sr. (D10), James Rosapepe (D21), Anthony Muse (26), Cory McCray (D45), and Charles Sydnor (D44).

Our hopes for committee advancement are especially uplifted this year by Maryland State Senator William C. “Will” Smith, who returned as the Senate bill’s chief sponsor and also chairs the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee.
