“Take Me Out Feet First” Season 1 is now free on YouTube — and Season 2 is on the way

A documentary about medical aid in dying does the most good when the people who need it most can actually watch it, and now “Take Me Out Feet First,” the documentary series developed with Compassion & Choices, is available for free on YouTube. Season 2 has been announced and is set to premiere on the same channel next year.

Season 1 tells the stories of terminally ill advocates, several of whom worked directly with Compassion & Choices, who pushed for medical aid in dying in their home states through legislative testimony, personal appeals to lawmakers, and in at least one case, a court challenge — often without knowing whether they’d live to see the outcome.

These are stories from advocates like Danna Nelson, who at 21 was studying trombone in Finland when she was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer. In 2020, as the cancer progressed, she moved home to Blaine, Minnesota, to be near her parents, Dan and Candy, and became a fierce advocate for the state’s End-of-Life Option Act before her death in 2022. Her parents didn’t stop when she died; they’ve since testified before the Minnesota legislature themselves.

In Massachusetts, Dr. Roger Kligler paired legislative advocacy with a legal strategy, serving as plaintiff in Kligler v. Healey, a suit seeking judicial recognition that medical aid in dying is not a criminal act under state common law. Kligler, who lives with metastatic prostate cancer, among other conditions, said the goal was making the option available to people not in a position to advocate for themselves.

Season 1 made the case that these fights were personal and urgent, not abstract policy debates. Now, with the series free to watch, more people have the chance to see why.
