Alan Eason embodied what it means to be an advocate—deeply committed and relational, generous with his time and talents, and guided by both intellect and empathy.
For over a decade, Alan volunteered with Compassion & Choices and became a pillar of the Maryland Action Team. A brilliant attorney with a warm heart and quick wit, Alan could bring levity to any situation. He faithfully attended every monthly meeting, lobby day, and legislative hearing, bringing thoughtfulness, humor, and a steadfast belief in the importance of patient-directed care.
Alan could always be counted on to chip in wherever needed — whether carrying chairs, drafting an op-ed, or helping with strategy development for legislative outreach. He was a true partner in this work and built deep relationships along the way. As Brandi Alexander, chief engagement officer at Compassion & Choices, reflects: “I received pictures of Alan’s grandkids throughout the years and we built a long-standing friendship and rapport. It was a privilege and honor to not only work with Alan but to be his friend.”
After more than 30 years serving as an assistant attorney general for the State of Maryland, Alan retired in 2010 and dedicated himself to advocating for patients’ rights at the end of life.
In addition to volunteering with Compassion & Choices, he audited health care law courses, led advance directive workshops, and offered MOLST trainings. He was involved with several groups, such as the ethics review board at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, and served as chair of the Maryland State Advisory Council on Quality Care at the End of Life. His engagement was deep, informed, multifaceted, and rooted in dignity and choice.
We’re deeply grateful for Alan’s friendship and dedication to improving the end-of-life experience for all people. His legacy lives on in the work of the Maryland Action Team, in the relationships he built at Compassion & Choices and beyond, and in the countless lives he impacted.
Over the past 10 years, Alan created a playlist for people to listen to after his death—a passion project and labor of love. Enjoy it here.
