Over 120 Compassion & Choices supporters attended a September 11 informational hearing on the Minnesota End-of-Life Option Act before the House Health & Human Services Committee. The strong turnout necessitated much of the opposition to watch from an overflow room in the basement.

Testifiers included Compassion & Choices President Barbara Coombs Lee, Dr. David Plimpton, Reverend Harlan Limpert, and several storytellers and volunteers. No vote was taken, but Committee Chair Rep. Rena Moran promised to allow for an unlimited debate session once the bill comes up for a vote. “Critically important to this hearing’s success were the testimonies of our terminally ill advocates Marianne Turnbull and Bobbi Jacobsen,” said Field Director Tim Appleton. “Real Minnesotans with real stories, both were poised, ready and altogether outstanding, driving home the fierce urgency of this issue to members of the committee.”

While helping build a case for the necessity of a full hearing during the legislative session starting in February, the interim hearing also provided an important opportunity to learn the concerns of undecided lawmakers who will hear the bill then, better preparing our Minnesota team for success in the state.
