Medical aid in Dying Documentary Wins duPont Award

Compassion & Choices congratulates KING-TV Reporter John Sharify and photojournalist Joseph Huerta for winning a 2021 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for their documentary “Bob’s Choice.” The duPont award honors excellence in broadcast and digital journalism in public service, and is considered one of the most prestigious awards in journalism.

“Bob’s Choice” is a factual, authentic and empathetic story that follows Bob Fuller, a 75-year-old Seattle-area man with cancer who plans to utilize Washington’s medical aid in dying law, through the last two months of his life.

The film authentically portrays the process and emotions surrounding medical aid in dying, and treats both Bob Fuller and the subject matter with care and sensitivity, without  compromising the film’s journalistic integrity.

Compassion & Choices advocates for states to pass laws similar to the one that Bob Fuller utilized in the film. We have shown “Bob’s Choice” in communities around the nation, including in California, Florida, North Carolina, Illinois, and Delaware. Without fail, many viewers are moved to take action in their communities after seeing the film.

KING-TV has made the film available for anyone to watch. Watch Bob’s Choice on YouTube
