Anna Camp in a scene from “Here Awhile”

Compassion & Choices’ Staying Stronger Together webinar series hit new heights in July, with an especially varied roster of events.

American Atheists hosted CEO Kim Callinan in a frank discussion with their national field director, Samantha McGuire. Topics ranged from public support for and opposition to medical aid in dying, and how end-of-life issues appeal to the core fundamental of Atheism: separation of religion and government.

Later in the month Kim served as a panelist on Washington, D.C., Arena Stage’s Arena Civil Dialogues. Kim was joined by four other experts from the fields of bioethics, elder care and health policy for an engrossing conversation on the topic Healthcare Rationing and End of Life Decisions: Who and How? Notable was the impact on perspectives due to the current realities of COVID-19.

Then in a cinematic departure, actor Anna Camp, known for many film and television roles including HBO’s True Blood and Oscar-winner The Help, spoke with Kim and answered audience questions about her lead in the recent movie about a terminally ill woman pursuing medical aid in dying in California, Here Awhile. “I’m usually playing the uptight, bubbly, singing blonde,” said Anna about the dramatic role, which is more closely aligned with her theater work. Anna also discussed the project and her views around end-of-life issues in the Winter 2020 edition of Compassion & Choices Magazine. And we’ve put together a Here Awhile discussion guide in case you’d like to host a conversation of your own about the film.

Our Staying Stronger Together webinar series is one of the many ways Compassion & Choices is working to keep everyone in the movement connected through limitations of the current pandemic. Check our website for what’s coming in August!
