Last January, Compassion & Choices released Finish Strong: Putting Your Priorities First at Life’s End. Since then, Finish Strong has become a rallying call to the public to lead with their values concerning end-of-life healthcare decisions. It’s been enormously gratifying to hear from people nationwide for whom Finish Strong has prompted crucial conversations with their families and doctors. I’ve traveled from California to Florida to Illinois talking to twentysomethings and eightysomethings who are using this resource to live life more fully by preparing for the end. 

At presentations people often inquire how Finish Strong could reach more people in need of a frank and honest book about the many possible paths to dying. Many have asked for an audiobook version of Finish Strong so they could listen on their way to work, running errands or cooking dinner, or if their eyes weren’t so comfortable reading anymore. Audiobooks are an accessible and ever-growing way Americans enjoy books. And it’s not being lazy! In fact, a 2019 study found that listening to audiobooks activates the same part of your brain as reading. And according to Pew Research Center, 1 in 5 Americans listen to audiobooks, and the number is rising. 

I recorded the audiobook in my own voice, too, because these stories, observations, impressions and insights — even songs! — are very personal to me. I wanted to share them with the intimacy of a real conversation. It is conversations, after all, that are essential to ensure a strong finish — listen and see.
