Compassion & Choices Latino Leadership Council Continues Outreach and Education

This month, Compassion & Choices staff and members of our African American and Latino Leadership Councils attended the National Hispanic Council on Aging Awards Dinner and Fundraiser in Washington, D.C., and the National Hispanic Health Foundation's Annual California Hispanic Health Professional Student Scholarship Gala in Los Angeles, California. The NHCOA event served as an opportunity for all those involved in improving the lives of Hispanic older adults, their families and caregivers to celebrate their meaningful work. And the NHHF gala recognized Hispanic health professional students for their exceptional academic performance, leadership and commitment to caring for Hispanics. The NHHF is the philanthropic arm of the National Hispanic Medical Association. Its mission is to improve the health of Hispanics and other underserved groups through research and education.

The Compassion & Choices Latino Leadership Council attends various events hosted by other organizations that work toward improving the lives of Hispanics in order to advance its mission of expanding end-of-life education to the Latino community. In 2019, Compassion & Choices will work in conjunction with the National Hispanic Council on Aging to facilitate two webinars about end-of-life options to the members of the National Hispanic Medical Association. The National Hispanic Council on Aging has worked to improve the lives of Hispanic older adults, their families and their caregivers for more than 30 years. The president of the National Hispanic Council on Aging, Dr. Yanira Cruz, also serves on the Latino Leadership Council.

The Latino and African American Leadership Councils were created to improve end-of-life care outreach to communities of color. In the year since their inception, the councils have secured endorsements for medical aid-in-dying legislation in key states and advanced end-of-life healthcare education across the country.
