Black History Month Spotlight: Rev. Dr. Paul Smith

Rev. Dr. Paul Smith is a civil rights activist and former pastor who led churches in Buffalo, NY, St. Louis, MO, Atlanta, GA and Brooklyn, NY. His activism started in the 1950s and includes the Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965. His activities within the church include fostering multicultural worship and interfaith collaboration and sharing the pulpit with notable figures like His Holiness The Dalai Lama. 

Rev. Dr. Smith is the author of a book, Facing Death, which portrays his experience with death and dying as a minister. He has also served academic and healthcare institutions. He currently serves on multiple boards and remains active in his community.

Rev. Dr. Smith has a long relationship with Compassion & Choices, including serving on the Board of Directors and Board of Advisors. He is a notable figure in the end-of-life options movement, lending his voice to support Compassion & Choices’ efforts in New York, Maryland, and across the country.
