A medical aid-in-dying bill was introduced in the House for the 2020 legislative session by Delegate Kaye Kory. It has been referred to Committee for Courts of Justice but the House took no further action. Compassion & Choices held a successful lobby day in Richmond on January 29, 2020, with over 50 of activists and several media outlets in attendance. Compassion & Choices supporters and staff on the ground want to extend our gratitude to Delegate Kaye Kory for reintroducing this important legislation and speaking with us.
In 2018, the Virginia Joint Commission on Health Care (JCHC), a standing committee of the Virginia General Assembly, released a report on medical aid in dying. Compassion and Choices submitted comments to the report and the Commission will vote on the recommendations in the report in November.
The report details a comparison of the current medical aid in dying statutes, implementation and access in the authorized states as well as key areas of disagreement among the work group stakeholders. Compassion & Choices staff and volunteers participated as key stakeholders. Read the full report here. Read news coverage here.
